in the picture sergio bejar

My name is Sergio Béjar and I’m from Barcelona. My interest in photography began many years ago. My first camera was a Samsung compact analog with which I became interested especially in landscapes and people. Today I don’t leave home without my Reflex, you never know what can happen. I used to photograph street people, landscapes and details of everyday life, always trying to give a personal touch. By 2010 I won an annual award of a magazine with a picture of a homeless man in NY. For me it is more than a hobby, it is a passion and someday I would like to exhibit my photographs in a gallery.
We’d like to thank Sergio for sharing his photos. For more of his work please visit his website or Flickr page.

sumo wrestlers training in fukushima

Sumo wrestlers, eager to give back to the community that has hosted their summer training for 20 years, have returned to the Japanese port district that was devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, just 50 km (31 miles) away from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant which continues to leak radiation. Having the wrestlers return as if it was any other summer is seen by many as a vital step to lift morale as survivors make fragile attempts to rebuild their shattered lives

Before, During and After Hurricane Irene

Irene came, saw and went away. By the time hurricane Irene reached New York it had been relegated to a tropical storm. This didn’t make it any less impressive though.

formula one 2011 belgian grand prix

The Belgian Grand Prix is held on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, one of the few in the world which EVERY driver loves to race at. Fast corners, long straights, nice elevation and the weather always plays it’s part. Qualifying was held in wet condition which started to dry out towards the end, basically the man who managed to get round at exactly the right moment would be on pole position. This man was once again Sebastian Vettel. On race day the weather played no part, but the blistering tires did. After some early dicing with Rosberg in his Mercedes Vettel pulled out a lead over Alonso and Hamilton. Hamilton crashed, Alonso started to slow in the final third of the race and Vettel stayed in P1 untill the chequered flag fell. Webber and Button took the remaining two podium places.

Libya: The fight continues

Of the six days since the revolt reached the capital of Tripoli, August 25th may have been the bloodiest yet. Evidence of fresh massacres by both sides around the city were reported, while the battle to establish full control of Colonel Khadafy's breached compound, Bab al-Aziziya, raged on. In their drive to take command of Tripoli, the rebels concentrated their forces on a block-by-block battle for the streets of the Abu Salim neighborhood, a center of Colonel Khadafy's support. By late afternoon, the fighting had once again swamped Tripoli Central Hospital with wounded civilians and combatants. Remembering the Berlin Wall

In 1961, East Germany erected a wall -- initially barbed wire, eventually concrete -- in the middle of Berlin to prevent its citizens from fleeing the communist country to West Germany during the of the Cold War. It has been reported that 136 people died while trying to escape, but the total number is unknown. The wall finally came down at the beginning of November in 1989, part of the reunification of East and West Germany. Here are images from this past weekend’s recognition of the construction of the wall 50 years ago, as well as historic images. -- Lloyd Young (30 photos total)

Sleeping People around the world in picture

Most of us don't get enough sleep. "As the world is getting faster and crazier, I've noticed sleepers around the streets, just everywhere," writes photographer Romain Philippon. "Of course, I also see some poetry and dreamings in all of that, but the contrast is so interesting to me, people trying to escape to their condition…" Philippon is self-publishing a book on the topic called "Inconscience". The first eight photographs in this entry are from that book. Collected here as well are more photographs of people everywhere lucky enough to find a few winks. -- Lane Turner (32 photos total)

Coolest Picture around the world captured by World Best Photographer

A day too late, but I’m sure you’ll forgive me. Sometimes spending some time with your family is more important than spending time with your computer. The past week was all supossed to be about the final ever landing of a Space Shuttle until a crazed gunman (or as reports are now saying two crazed gunmen) killed at least 91 people in Norway. Our thoughts go out to our Norwegian friends. Warning: some of the images below are shocking.

Ramadan begins in picture

Muslims around the globe have begun their holiest month of the year by giving up food, drink, smoking and other physical needs from dawn till dusk each day. In many communities, large dinner gatherings are held each evening to break the fast. South Korean deluge

After a month of heavy rain saturated mountainsides, a fresh deluge sent landslides sweeping into Seoul last week, killing 59 people. Ten were still reported missing. In a strange compounding of the misery, the landslides and flash flooding washed away landmines buried near an air defense unit in Seoul. Soldiers were searching for those landmines as well as North Korean landmines washed away near the border. A total of 76 landslides of different severity struck after the most intense rainstorm in Korea in the last century. Ten university students lost their lives while volunteering at a summer camp for kids when a landslide struck in Chuncheon. "If it keeps raining like this, no country in the world can endure this," South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said. -- Lane Turner (25 photos total)
