Afghanistan in picture (43 photos total)
Saturday, November 27th marked a milestone in Afghanistan - after that day passed, the United States and its allies have now been in Afghanistan longer than the Soviet Union had been when it withdrew in 1989. Recent announcements by the U.S. appear to show that it plans to remain at least another four years. In the south, U.S. forces are increasingly encountering abandoned buildings that are heavily booby-trapped as they pursue the Taliban, leading them to systematically destroy the structures. Arghandab district governor Shah Muhammed Ahmadi said "In some villages where only a few houses were contaminated by bombs, we called the owners and got their agreement to destroy them, In some villages like Khosrow that were completely empty and full of IED's, we destroyed them without agreement because it was hard to find the people - and not just Khosrow, but many villages. National Geographic's Photography Contest 2010 (23 pics) Part 1
National Geographic is once again holding their annual Photo Contest,
with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30th. For the
past eight weeks, they have been gathering and presenting galleries of
submissions, encouraging readers to rate them as well. National Geographic was again kind enough to let me
choose some of their entries from 2010 for display here on The Big
Picture. Collected below are 46 images from the three categories of
People, Places and Nature. Captions were written by the individual
photographers. (46 photos total)

Entire city made of biscuits
Created by Chinese artist Song Dong in the basement of London Selfridges. 72,000 biscuits were used in total to construct the ‘Biscuit city’ including Chocolate Digestives, Rich Tea, HobNobs and Fruit Shortcakes. The ‘biscuit city’ is being offered to shoppers accompanied with a cup of tea for dunking.

The largest nail and toothpicks mosaic ever made
Saimir Strati (Vlora, Albania, April 11, 1966) is an Albanian artist who is regarded as one of the world’s most well known modern mosaic artists.
He is artist who hammers tens of thousands of nails and toothpicks into a wooden board to create his awesome mosaic art. It’s amazing how one has the patience to create such art and it was even reported that Saimir Strati is attempting to mount a steed chart together using 1 million toothpicks. Some of his best works include the portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci created using hammered nails and the galloping horse using toothpicks.
Saimir Strati is primarily an artist who works in mosaics. He has used materials including nails, toothpicks, corks, sea glass, eggshells, compact discs, coffee beans, porcelain and mirror glass among other materials. He is also a painter. The diversity of the artist’s subjects, material and technique distinguish Saimir Strati as being traditional and contemporary with his approach on reviving the old technique and professionalism in antiquity and the mingling of daily/ industrial material.

Breathtaking moments
As we have seen in the previous articles, most of the artists were able to bedazzle us with their awesome photo manipulations. But, what if an artist could produce breath taking results without manipulations. As anyone who watched the opening ceremony of the recent Beijing Olympics will attest, China has been enjoying a burgeoning of the performing arts in recent years. One of the most striking artists to emerge from this thriving scene is Li Wei, who has become renowned for his arresting and seemingly gravity-defying photographic work. Strangely enough, his works are not photo-shopped but are a result his awesome skills.
